If you want to optimize your website for search engines, you need to know what keywords your target audience is searching for. Keywords are the words and phrases that people type into Google or other search engines when they are looking for information, products, or services online.

One of the best tools to find and analyze keywords is Google Keyword Planner. Google Keyword Planner is a free tool that helps you discover new keywords related to your business, see how popular they are, and how much competition they have.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to use Google Keyword Planner to find and select the best keywords for your website. I will also provide you with a PDF guide that you can download and refer to whenever you need it.


Step 1: Access Google Keyword Planner

To use Google Keyword Planner, you need to have a Google Ads account. If you don't have one, you can create one for free here: https://ads.google.com/home/

Once you have a Google Ads account, you can access Google Keyword Planner by clicking on the Tools icon in the top right corner of your screen and selecting Keyword Planner from the drop-down menu.


Step 2: Choose a keyword research option

Google Keyword Planner offers two options for keyword research: Discover new keywords and Get search volume and forecasts.

Discover new keywords allows you to enter a word, phrase, or URL related to your business and get hundreds of keyword ideas that you can use for your website content.

Get search volume and forecasts allows you to enter a list of keywords that you already have and get data on how many people search for them, how much they cost, and how they might perform in the future.

For this tutorial, we will use the Discover new keywords option.


Step 3: Enter a word, phrase, or URL related to your business

In the Discover new keywords page, you can enter a word, phrase, or URL related to your business and click on Get Results.

For example, if you have a website that sells dog toys, you can enter "dog toys" as a word or phrase, or enter the URL of your website or a competitor's website.

Google Keyword Planner will then generate a list of keyword ideas related to your input.


Step 4: Filter and sort the keyword ideas

The keyword ideas list shows you various data for each keyword, such as:
  • Average monthly searches: The average number of times people searched for this keyword per month over the past 12 months.
  • Competition: The level of competition among advertisers bidding on this keyword. It can be low, medium, or high.
  • Top of page bid (low range): The lower range of what advertisers have historically paid for a click on their ad when it appeared at the top of the search results page for this keyword.
  • Top of page bid (high range): The higher range of what advertisers have historically paid for a click on their ad when it appeared at the top of the search results page for this keyword.
You can use these data to filter and sort the keyword ideas according to your goals and preferences.

For example, if you want to find keywords that have high search volume but low competition, you can use the filters icon in the top left corner of the list and set the criteria as follows:
  • Average monthly searches: Greater than 1000
  • Competition: Low
You can also sort the list by clicking on any of the column headers. For example, if you want to sort the list by average monthly searches from high to low, you can click on the Average monthly searches header.


Step 5: Select the best keywords for your website


After filtering and sorting the keyword ideas list, you can select the best keywords for your website by checking the boxes next to them.

You can also see more details about each keyword by clicking on it. This will show you a graph with historical data on how many people searched for this keyword over time, as well as a breakdown of how many people searched for this keyword in different locations, devices, and languages.

You can also see how this keyword performs in Google Ads by clicking on Plan your ad spend. This will show you an estimate of how many clicks and impressions you can get if you run an ad campaign using this keyword, as well as how much it will cost you.

Once you have selected the best keywords for your website, you can download them as a CSV file by clicking on Download keyword. This will allow you to easily import them into your SEO tool of choice and start optimizing your pages for better rankings. But before you do that, there are some things you should know about how to use keywords effectively.

First, you should understand the different types of keywords and how they relate to your audience's intent. Keywords can be classified into three categories: informational, navigational and transactional. 

Informational keywords are used when people are looking for general information or answers to questions. 

Navigational keywords are used when people are looking for a specific website or page. Transactional keywords are used when people are ready to buy something or take an action.

Second, you should match your keywords to the appropriate stage of the buyer's journey. The buyer's journey is the process that your potential customers go through before they make a purchase decision. 

It consists of three stages: awareness, consideration and decision. Awareness keywords are used when people are becoming aware of their problem or need. 

Consideration keywords are used when people are evaluating different options or solutions. Decision keywords are used when people are ready to choose a specific product or service.

Third, you should use long-tail keywords instead of short-tail keywords whenever possible. Long-tail keywords are more specific and less competitive than short-tail keywords. 

They usually consist of three or more words and have a lower search volume but a higher conversion rate. For example, instead of using "shoes" as a keyword, you could use "women's running shoes" or "best shoes for plantar fasciitis". 

Long-tail keywords will help you attract more qualified traffic and rank higher on search engines.


By following these tips, you will be able to use keywords more effectively and improve your website's performance. Remember that keyword research is not a one-time task but an ongoing process that requires constant monitoring and updating. You should always keep an eye on your competitors' strategies, your audience's behavior and the latest trends in your industry. By doing so, you will be able to stay ahead of the game and grow your online presence.
